Deconstructing Advertisement: Critiquing Advertisement

on Mon Aug 06, 2018 1:50 pm
Semiotics is the study of signs, how they work and how we use them.

Semiotic analysis can be done to any media text to explore it’s underlying meanings.

   1. Images
One of the most frequent symbols used in advertising is the visual image of the product being sold. Some images don't even have to be of what's being promoted. Instead, a commonly associated symbol will suffice. For example, a picture of a skull and crossbones next to a pack of cigarettes could be used to advertise the harmful nature of cigarette smoking.

   2. Text
Text can also be used to serve as a symbol in advertising in the same way that an image is used. Frequently one word will convey a message with the same effectiveness as an entire picture.

   3. Sound
Symbols do not have to be visual in nature. They can be audible, as well. Music, for example, is a sort of universal language that advertisers use to convey the mood of their message. The actual content of the music itself can also be a symbol for an advertised product or message.

   4. Process
The use of semiotics in advertising is in many ways a process. Semiotics employs the use of repeated symbols that eventually come to signify the product. The message's effectiveness can still be instantaneous, but the branding that takes place by introducing such a symbol will generally take months, if not years, to establish. Advertisers do this, not only through repetition, but also through the combining of symbols, bringing words, images and music together into one meaningful and coherent composition.

What is the most used type of advertisement?
On your own ,how would you critique an Advertisement?

I critiques an Advertisement by considering these questions,if the advertisement pass these questions, then for me , it is effective to the audience.

What is the advertisement about?
How are men and women represented? (Think about the setting, kitchen, laundry, workplace, etc, the activities they are engaged in, the language that is used by, and about, men and women, etc.)
Who is represented and omitted?
How do you react to the advertisement?
What is the literal and implied message of the advertisement?
Who is it aimed at?

Thank you for giving information. Each and every day we encounter visual advertisements that attempt to sway our thoughts and actions in certain ways. Whether it is to purchase a product or support a cause, millions of different companies and organizations are aiming for our attention and they know that the best way of gaining it is through advertising. However, in a society run by competitive advertisement, designers have to be creative in order to stand out. Some designers use the shock factor to make an impact to their audience, while others use fancy digital imaging or celebrity endorsement. I feel that some of the most successful advertisements are those that keep things simple. Very Happy

Advertisements are embedded with images and ideas that produce, perpetuate, and normalize whiteness and white supremacy in our culture and society.

Semiotics is the study of sign systems. It explores how words and other signs make meaning. In semiotics, a sign is anything that stands in for something other than itself. This lesson focuses primarily on linguistic signs. The word 'semiotics' dates back to ancient Greece, but its use in modern linguistics was propelled in the 19th century with the research of Ferdinand de Saussure. Saussure was a Swiss linguist who contributed greatly to the study of semiotics, also sometimes referred to as semiology.

Ferdinand de Saussure is one of the founder of semiotics, but there are some other theorist who give an additional information and improve the study.

semiology made up just a part of the
whole of semiotics. While semiology concerned itself only with
intentional communication acts, such as speaking and writing, or other related
forms such as gesture and Morse code, Peircean semiotics included all sensory
stimuli that could create another idea in the receiver’s mind. Smile
